I grew up in Walthamstow, London E17 which is a vibrant multi-cutural area which exposed me to so many different music genres. in my teens during the 80’s I really got into jazz-funk and would spend every hard earned penny on buying American import 12″ singles, which meant a train ride to Soho and a visit to Bluebird Records. It wasn’t easy getting the music you loved back then.

Truth be told, I fell out of love with this music a little in the late 80’s, it became a little to sugary, a little too nice, but I still embraced the heritage and played everything by the most soulful man that lived; Bobby Womack. I got into early hip-hop, and loved De La Soul, Public Enemy, Cyprus Hill. I’m not a genre snob, I love the likes of The Pixies, Nirvana, R.E.M & Suede, for me music just has to have heart.

It was the mid 90’s that brought me back to dance music in a big way. Glastonbury 1995 saw Orbital, the first “dance ” band to play the main stage and they absolutely tore the place down, a truly spiritual feeling. Faithless, Prodigy, Leftfield, Goldie, Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim, Underworld & The Chemical Brothers all followed and suddenly dance music wasn’t just a niche, everyone was dancing. With uplifiting house and trance, there was not a better time to be alive. I now love electronica and having got into DJing, its great to be able to experiment with sound and create different feelings and emotions in the music.

So, my Sunday show, Waking Up With The MackDaddy, will embrace this rich history, you will hear some rare grooves, uplifting dance, and classic soul. It will never be formularic, it will never be ordinary. I want you the audience, to become a friend of this show, I want to hear from you how this music makes you feel and inspire me to play some of the music you love. So let’s get together for a late breakfast and serve the music sunny side up.
